Now that we’ve heard our full slate of presentations for the spring 2025 term, we can look forward to resuming our weekly membership meetings in September. I hope you agree with me that we had a
terrific series of presentations on topics educational, interesting, important and timely. Our Curriculum Committee, chaired by Carlos Glender, our First Vice President, did a terrific job finding and scheduling
those speakers.

Among other topics, we heard and learned about the following (these are but a few of the topics covered this term):
What it takes to bring an artistic vision in musical theater to fruition, as explained by Laura Little.
- The scope and concerns regarding the relationship between the United States and China. Prof.Zhu of Davidson College was our instructor in that meeting.
- Music and Social Change was the topic covered by Joe Kendrick of WNCW. Joe also covered thattopic more broadly at our annual retreat in April at Wildacres.
- We learned about the current state of research into Alzheimer’s disease from Dr. Adam Law of Cornell.
- Dmitry Vovchuk described the current status and forecast for NATO, which has new leadership, and issues related to its mission.
- The Butterfly Project of the Levine Jewish Community Center was the topic of a presentation by Lori Semel of the JCC.
- Our annual mountain retreat was a great success (in my humble opinion), with wonderful, interactive sessions led by Meg Stanley Johnson of Queens University (she discussed musical therapy) and Joe Kendrick (Joe brought music into the greater societal context in his talks).
While our fall 2025 lineup of speakers is not yet complete, we have already scheduled talks on the global economy, aging, election integrity, Mexico, the history of firefighting and financial fraud directed at seniors (i.e., us). As the musical group The Happenings sang in 1966, I hope to “see you in September.”

New Volunteer Positions Open!
As you know (because we constantly tell you), Senior Scholars is an all-volunteer organization. The volunteer herself or himself gains much directly, though, from being actively involved. A sense of community, realization of new or enhanced skills, improved mental health, improved self-esteem, new friends, finding purpose, making meaningful contributions to our generation and the community are things that we experience by doing so. Our main needs are the following:
- Secretary of the Board of Directors effective in September. The person assuming this role will be a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Queens University Liaison. This role will be critical in our collaboration with the liaison from Queens.
- Membership Committee Chair. This person will partner with Pam Nemecek to learn the roles and responsibilities of the committee.
