In our email on Monday April 2, I referred to Lori Semel's presentation about the Butterfly Project this week (ie., on May 2). Unfortunately, the date that appeared below her photo in that email was in error. Our May 9 speaker will be Stephen Riggs. Lori will be our sole presenter on May 2. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused.
Greetings, Senior Scholars. Our annual retreat at Wildacres will start this afternoon and I’m sure that many of you look forward to convening at that center for three days of interesting and engaging presentations and conversation. I hope those who attend will enjoy the exploration of the benefits that music can provide and has in various contexts.

Following the presentation about what’s happening at Queens University, we’ll shift our focus in this week’s meeting to the Butterfly Project. Lori Semel, who directs that project at the Levine Jewish Community Center in Charlotte, will explain the purpose, history and significance of that initiative. I’m sure that her talk will resonate with the members.
During our meeting on April 25, we had a technical problem due to changes made by the Providence United Methodist Church to the main sound board. Though the video and audio had worked well during our sound check prior to the start of the meeting, when the speaker arrived and had her microphone in place, both audio and video cut out. Working with the church’s audiovisual contact, Senior Scholars’s technology group resolved the problem and restored both audio and video but, unfortunately, only just before the speaker concluded her remarks. The members who attempted to join via Zoom missed most of the presentation.

Mark Your Calendars!
Get ready to enjoy our last event before our summer break—our wonderful spring luncheon. Save Thursday, June 5 from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. for this perennially popular gathering. It will be at the Raintree Country Club, 8600 Raintree Lane (near the Arboretum off Pineville-Matthews Road), and cost $45 per person. The sumptuous buffet will include herbed chicken, pulled pork and fixings, mixed green salad, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and berry cobbler. Cash bar will be available. Our speaker will be local historian and man-about-town Tom Hanchett, who will talk about Charlotte’s changing food scene and hidden restaurants you should try.
Signup online at Spring Luncheon to pay using PayPal or credit card (preferred method) or for instructions on paying by check. Members can also visit the sign up table in Wolfe Hall at Friday meetings. |

The Butterfly Project
Lori Semel
Butterfly Project Coordinator
The Butterfly Project is a worldwide initiative with the goal of painting ceramic butterflies in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished during the Holocaust. The Butterfly Project workshop expands upon that goal, using the history of the Holocaust as a vehicle to teach what can happen when biased attitudes, biased acts, and discrimination are allowed to flourish.

VOLUNTEER TODAY!
As you know (because we constantly tell you), Senior Scholars is an all-volunteer organization. Without the efforts of the many who gladly donate their time and effort, we would not all enjoy the presentations, retreat, field trips, and social interaction of membership. The volunteer herself or himself gains much directly, though, from being actively involved. A sense of community, realization of new or enhanced skills, improved mental health, improved self-esteem, new friends, finding purpose, making meaningful contributions to our generation and the community are things that we experience by doing so. Review our needs for additional volunteers from our membership and contemplate how you might benefit yourself while helping us all.
