Greetings, Senior Scholars. Our spring lineup of speakers continues apace. On May 2, we heard a presentation by Lori Semel of the Levine Jewish Community Center describe the purpose, history and
impacts of the Butterfly Project. This Friday, May 9, we’ll hear Stephen Riggs discuss healthcare delivery from his vantage point at the Levine Cancer Institute and Wake Forest School of Medicine. On that date,
May 9, we will hold another of our periodic “mini-Expos,” where local organizations that provide or offer services to seniors will be represented in Wolfe Hall by 9:30 a.m., so our members can peruse those
offerings and speak with their representatives before our meeting starts at 10. This week, the Charlotte
Mecklenburg Library and Merrywood on Park will be represented.

If you attended our annual retreat at Wildacres from April 28 to May 1, I hope you enjoyed the presentations regarding music’s impact in a clinical context and on a societal level. The performance of mountain music on April 30 was a particular treat that was especially “on point.” If you were not able to attend, I hope you’ll consider including next year’s retreat in your plans.

Get ready to enjoy our last event before our summer break—our wonderful spring luncheon. Save Thursday, June 5 from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. for this perennially popular gathering. It will be at the Raintree Country Club, 8600 Raintree Lane (near the Arboretum off Pineville-Matthews Road), and cost $45 per person. The sumptuous buffet will include herbed chicken, pulled pork and fixings, mixed green salad, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and berry cobbler. Cash bar will be available. Our speaker will be local historian and man-about-town Tom Hanchett, who will talk about Charlotte’s changing food scene and hidden restaurants you should try.
Signup online at Spring Luncheon to pay using PayPal or credit card (preferred method) or for instructions on paying by check. Members can also visit the sign up table in Wolfe Hall at Friday meetings. |

Dr. Stephen Riggs
Levine Cancer Institute Update
Healthcare delivery is experiencing unprecedented change and growth. The United States spends more on healthcare than any other country but ranks lower than many when measuring many health outcomes. Government (Medicare and Medicaid) health insurance remains a topic of great debate while artificial intelligence brings excitement and new energy to fixing some of our greatest challenges.

VOLUNTEER TODAY!
As you know (because we constantly tell you), Senior Scholars is an all-volunteer organization. Without the efforts of the many who gladly donate their time and effort, we would not all enjoy the presentations, retreat, field trips, and social interaction of membership. The volunteer herself or himself gains much directly, though, from being actively involved. A sense of community, realization of new or enhanced skills, improved mental health, improved self-esteem, new friends, finding purpose, making meaningful contributions to our generation and the community are things that we experience by doing so. Review our needs for additional volunteers from our membership and contemplate how you might benefit yourself while helping us all.
