November 22 when we will hear about the Earl Scruggs Center, from Mary Beth Martin, its Executive Director. Be prepared to tap your toes with a smile on your face during the meeting as we hear live samples of Scruggs’ music. See below to register for Zoom. |

Congratulations, Senior Scholars Members! You are doing an excellent job of renewing your memberships for 2025. If you have not yet renewed, why don’t you log into our website right now while you are thinking about it and easily renew with your credit card? If you are already a member, the renewal cost for 2025 is only $25. We charge $35 to new members because it costs us $10 to have a new name badge made for them. While we can send the badges to you via regular mail, the U.S. Postal Service will not allow us to send the magnets that are needed to hold them to your clothes. So, you must attend a meeting in person in Wolfe Hall to collect your magnet. We are attracting many new members at this time. Whenever Pam Nemecek is processing new members, I receive an email for every new person she enters into our database. Congratulations, Senior Scholars Members!
As you encounter any of our 2024 SSQ Officers and committee volunteers over the next few weeks, please take time to thank them for volunteering during 2024. By now, given all my Friday announcements from the podium, you should know that we would not have such a vital, active, 51-year-old organization to this very day if it were not for our reliable, helpful volunteers. I would like to say a special “Thank you” to all of them and to Steve Lauer, our First Vice President, who has had to run meetings for me when I have been ill this year.
Thank you also for your attendance as members this year. We hope to see you in 2025, perhaps as a committee volunteer? You could also consider becoming an officer. As I retire from the presidential position, I will be heading up the Nominating Committee and will be diligently searching for new people to involve in our weekly operations. If you are interested, please let me know! Better, yet…if you know of new members who would like to become involved, I would love to know their names (and emails and phone numbers).

Holiday Luncheon
Just days after Thanksgiving, you are invited to enjoy a fun social event on Dec. 4 with your Senior Scholars friends. Nancy Stancill and the Social Committee have made wonderful plans for us at Maggiano’s Little Italy at SouthPark Mall. The plans also include some festive holiday music beforehand from two of our own members, Randy Broome on trombone and Pierce Howard on B flat and Piccolo trumpets. Who knows, they might even have a bit of percussion playing in the background! Our luncheon speaker, Mark Washburn, formerly with the Charlotte Observer, covered the Miracle on the Hudson story for two weeks after the plane went down. His memories will make a nice add-on to our recent field trip to the Sullenberger Aviation Museum. For the event, our tasty menu is slated to include:

Gigi’s Butter Cake or Tiramisu

Don’t all those courses sound delicious? You will also be able to order spirits, beer beverages or wine from their mini bar which will be located in our dining room, if you care to pay for them. Holiday Luncheon Registration is being held before our Friday meetings or with your credit card on our website. For only $50 per person, you will be able to share this feast family-style with other members! Bring your check on Friday to reserve your dining experience. Checks mailed to the Queens’ mailbox must be received by Friday November 22. The last day for online registration/payment is Monday November 25.

How to Sign Up to Attend a Meeting via Zoom
When you select the Speaker Event you wish to attend via Zoom, click on the Zoom Registration button. It will take you to a form that you will complete.
First Select your status: Member Choice, Guest Choice or Request a Member ID (if you have forgotten yours). Then, follow the steps listed on the form:
- Enter your Member ID# (bottom right corner of your membership card)
- Click on the Search button (this validates your member ID)
- Enter your Email Address
After following these steps, you can click on Proceed to Date Alignment (the date of the event you selected). You will have additional steps to sign onto the Zoom form. When you have completed these steps, you will receive an email with the Zoom link for that meeting.

We track receipt of the emails and try to send out a second copy to anyone whose address does not go through. The emails that are more likely to bounce have bellsouth.net, att.net, hotmail.com and msn.com listed as the email service.
