In August, unemployment overall declined for Hamilton. Looking at age groups, unemployment was still disproportionately high for the youth group (15-24), with an unemployment rate of 18.8% – more than double that of the regional unemployment rate of 6.7%. On the contrary, the core-working age group (25-54) had an unemployment rate of 5.7%.

Employee Mental Health Study |
|
|
|
PATH Employment Services is working on a collaboration with St. Joseph's Healthcare, Social Impact Squared, and Workforce Planning Hamilton, (with guidance from McMaster University researchers), to help them better understand the impact employee mental health has on small to medium sized businesses/employers, and also to learn more about how Occupational Therapy can play a role in supporting employers with any employee mental health challenges they may be facing/face.
Specifically, the "ask" is for you to participate in a 30-minute interview.
We know that your time is valuable, so we will provide you with an honorarium of a $50 President’s Choice gift card to compensate you for your time.
You will also learn about supports available for managing employee mental health challenges and have pre-release access to details about the program we are developing.
Click here if you hire, supervise, and/or manage employees and are willing to be interviewed: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/OTpilot
We will schedule interviews up to October 4th. Please direct any questions to socialimpact2@gmail.com.

Hamilton Public Library: Live Reading |
|
|
|
The library has a free upcoming event with Farzana Doctor that I think a lot of you might enjoy. The event includes a live reading and conversation with local author, activist, community organizer, and social worker Farzana Doctor, who discusses her new book
52 Weeks to a Sweeter Life.
As an activist, community organizer and social worker, Farzana has preached self-care to hundreds of people struggling with burnout and exhaustion. But for years, she couldn’t manage to take her own advice. She knew many other helpers and activists were the same: they struggled to escape the cycle of overwork, being overwhelmed, and recovering. 52 Weeks to a Sweeter Life is a workbook that speaks directly to these people — and anyone struggling to pause, set boundaries and centre their needs.
We think this event would be particularly uplifting for caregivers, activists, and helping professionals.
Registration is required, and can be accessed here: 52 Weeks to a Sweeter Life for Caregivers, Activists, Helping Professional Tickets, Thu, Sep 26, 2024 at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite.
The event takes place Thursday, September 26 at HPL’s Central Library. Doors open at 6! It is being presented in partnership with our friends at the Cancer Assistance Program.

As the labour market becomes increasingly diverse, organizations need to reconsider how they engage and retain employees. Immigration now accounts for almost all of Canada’s labour force growth, yet the underutilization of immigrant skills persists.

Maternity leave provides a chance for physical healing, time to connect with our newborns and support for emotional adjustments as we embrace our new role and responsibilities. As I embarked on this beautiful journey of motherhood at the start of 2023, I found myself at the intersection of two powerful identities: a first-time mother and a career enthusiast. |
